Tragedy struck along the Lekki area of Lagos on Sunday as a multiple road clash left three persons dead while eight others sustained varied degrees of injuries.
The incident happened on Sunday, September 20 when a fully loaded commercial bus collided with a Toyota Corolla.The crash happened at Marwa Roundabout at about 1pm, causing heavy gridlock on the Lekki-Epe Expressway.A commercial taxi was said to have rammed into a car before hitting another car.
According to The Punch, the commercial bus which was headed for Ajah was on top speed when its propeller broke, making the driver lose control of the vehicle. The bus skidded off the road and slammed into a Toyota which was conveying a couple.
An official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) who spoke under the condition of anonymity said the propeller likely got damaged while the driver was on top speed making the accident inevitable.
He said: “This incident happened around 12pm when a mini commuter bus travelling from Lekki to Ajah and loaded with passengers, had an accident around Marwa bus stop.
“The propeller of the vehicle must have been damaged while the driver was on top speed. We just observed that he skidded off the road.
“The bus collided with a black Toyota Corolla with two occupants, husband and wife. The conductor, a male passenger and a female passenger died on the spot.”
Mrs. Bola Ajao, the spokesperson for LASTMA advised passengers to caution drivers when they are driving too fast.
“Motorists must continue to exercise caution while driving on the road. Passengers must also not fail to warn drivers who are speeding. If a driver does not listen to you, please disembark the bus.”
The deceased were taken to a mortuary in the area while those who were wounded were transported to the Lagos Island general hospital for treatment.
Lagos state has been trying to combat accidents especially those caused by heavy duty vehicles The state government has bared heavy duty vehicles from plying the roads during the day.
